The City of Tulsa gathers drinking water from two main sources including Lake Spavinaw and Lake Eucha on Spavinaw Creek, and Lake Oologah on the Verdigris River. Water from these sources reaches the taps in homes not only in Tulsa, Oklahoma but in the surrounding areas of Broken Arrow, Owasso, Sand Springs and Bixby. Before reaching taps, the water in Tulsa is treated with chemicals at two plants, Mohawk and A.B. Jewell. Chemicals are added to disinfect the water from agricultural runoff and other harsh contaminants. In addition, the water in Tulsa is particularly hard due to its high concentration of dissolved minerals. That is why it’s recommended that your water be tested before selecting an appropriate filter. Water testing allows you to measure just how hard your water truly is, and to see what other chemicals made their way into your home’s water stream. Although hard water is safe to drink, it can cause damage including spotty glassware, stiff laundry, soap residue, itchy scalp, dry skin, lime buildup and low-performing appliances. Aside from testing the water quality, you can stay up to date on the local water conditions by reading the latest water quality report for Tulsa.

Tulsa has not set any active restrictions in terms of water conservation, but they do have a plan in place for if and when conservation becomes more of a necessity. They plan to follow an odd/even watering system, including one voluntary and multiple mandatory stages. For example, if a home address ends in an even number, residents will water their lawns only on even days of the month. This pattern is a base for the following stages. The general population could be called upon to conserve water by voluntarily limiting outside water usage from noon to midnight every other day. In the first mandatory stage, watering will be restricted every other day from noon to midnight. In the second mandatory stage, watering can only be done between midnight and noon every other day and by a hand-held hose only. The last stage calls for a ban on all outside watering. Nearby areas such as Broken Arrow have similar plans in place.

Any Tulsa area residents concerned about their general water quality can schedule an appointment for a free in-home consultation from a Pentair Pelican water professional. All consultations and installations are backed by a 60-day labor guarantee. For a full list of locations where in-home services are offered, please visit the Pentair Pelican in-home services page.
