The primary drinking water source is surface water from the Kansas River, with reservoirs in the Kansas River Basin providing reserves for Topeka and several nearby municipalities. The Kansas Department of Health and Environment detected unsafe levels of haloacetic acids (HAA) in Topeka’s drinking water a little over a year ago.
