Water Isn’t Free, How Can We Save More of It?

The world’s fresh water supply is limited, and all of us should try to conserve water as much as we can. This not only helps the environment: It saves us money on our water bill each month.

Water-Saving-Tips

To save more water at home, try some of these helpful tips:

  • Check toilet to see if it is leaking – Drop some food coloring in the toilet tank. Do not flush. If the color starts to show up in the bowl within 30 minutes, there is a leak that needs repair.
  • Check the water meter for stealth leaks – Read the water meter outside before and after a 120-minute period when no water is used. If the meter reads differently, there is a leak.
  • Install a water-saving showerhead that uses 2.5 gallons per minute or less. These are easy to install, and you would be surprised – many water-saving showerheads use the latest technology to make it seem like more water is flowing than you think (our Pelican Premium Shower Filter saves water, and removes harmful chlorine). Also remember that a long, hot shower can use up to 10 extra gallons per minute. Keep it short and sweet!
  • Add weight to the toilet tank – Water waste can be reduced by putting an inch of sand or pebbles in two plastic bottles. Fill the bottles to the top with water, and place in the toilet tank. This may save up to 10 gallons per day, per toilet.
  • Turn off water during tooth brushing -This can save 30 gallons per day in a household.
  • Rinse razor in the sink – By filling the sink with a few inches of water, you can rinse it off just as well as with running water.
  • Insulate water pipes – Pipes can be easily insulated with foam pipe insulation. This will get you hot water fast, and will avoid running water as you wait for it to heat up (also consider a Pelican circulator pump – which constantly circulates hot water in the pipes, giving the whole family nearly instant hot water. A great money saver).
  • Only use dishwashers and washing machines for full loads – These appliances should only be used at full capacity to save water. Also, do not pre-rinse dishes, as this also wastes water (Lemi Shine Dishwasher Detergent boosts the effectiveness of your dishwasher). With a clothes washer, do not use permanent press because this adds five gallons for the added rinse.

Another great way to save water is to install a salt-free water softener system in your home. Hard water makes getting clean clothes and dishes more difficult, and it also is bad for appliances. To save water and save money, a Pelican NaturSoft Salt-Free Water Softener can really make a difference in the long haul.
