Unique Recipes for National Lasagna Day

July 29 is National Lasagna Day, and we’re celebrating the occasion by bringing you two unique recipes for this Italian staple. Choose your favorite and whip up a warm, cheesy dish to enjoy with your loved ones.

    Creole Lasagna

A spicy, Bayou twist on an Italian classic!

    • ½ lb. Andouille smoked sausage
    • 1 (8-oz.) pkg. dried lasagna noodles
    • ½ lb. lean ground beef
    • 2 cloves garlic, minced
    • ¼ cup chopped onion
    • ¼ cup chopped green pepper
    • ½ cup chopped celery
    • ¼ tsp. ground red pepper
    • ½ tsp. salt
    • 2 tsp. sugar
    • 1 (6-oz.) can tomato paste
    • 1½ cups filtered water
    • ⅓ cup finely shredded Parmesan cheese
    • 8 oz. sliced mozzarella cheeseLasagna

Grease a rectangular, 3-quart baking dish and set it aside. Slice sausage. Cook noodles according to package details — be sure to use Pelican filtered water for better-tasting pasta — and drain. At the same time, cook sausage over medium-high heat, stirring often until lightly browned. Remove sausage and cook ground beef in same pan, adding garlic, onion, green peppers, and celery. Once meat is browned, drain the fat and stir in ground red pepper, salt, sugar, tomato paste, filtered water, and sausage. Bring to a boil before reducing heat and covering for 15 minutes. Arrange half of the noodles in greased baking dish. Top with half the cheeses and meat sauce. Repeat layers until you run out of ingredients. Bake covered at 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Top with cheese and bake for another 10 minutes. Let dish cool for 10 minutes before serving.

    Taco Lasagna

Everyone loves lasagna. And everyone loves tacos. Why not combine the two?

    • 2 lbs. ground beef
    • 2 Tbsp. hot salsa
    • 1 pkg. taco seasoning
    • 1 (4-oz.) can green chilies
    • 1 (16-oz.) can refried beans
    • 1 (12-oz.) pkg. uncooked lasagna noodles
    • 4 cups Colby jack cheese
    • 1 (16-oz.) jar mild salsa
    • 2 cups filtered water
    • 1 medium tomato, chopped
    • 3 green onions, chopped
    • 1 can sliced ripe olives
    • 2 cups sour cream

Cook beef in large skillet and drain the fat. Stir in hot salsa, taco seasoning, chilies, and beans. Grease a 13” x 9” baking dish. Create layer of noodles and add half of meat mixture on top. Sprinkle with a cup of cheese. Repeat layers twice. Mix salsa with filtered water and pour over the top. Bake covered at 350 degrees for 60 minutes. Top with tomatoes, onions, olives, sour cream, and remaining cheese. Bake uncovered for five more minutes. Let dish cool for 10 minutes before serving.
