    Mind-Blowing U.S. Water Facts

The 4th of July is here, and with it come the festive barbecues, splendid fireworks, and delicious grub that make Independence Day so iconic. On our favorite summer holiday we consume or use millions of gallons of water for refreshments, pool parties, and other activities. In celebration of July 4th, here are some of the wildest U.S. water facts:

    • 9 trillion gallons of water are consumed in the United States every month!
    • 264,837 square miles of America, or 7% of the country, is covered in water (including lakes, rivers, and bayous).
    • The largest lake in America is Lake Superior, which covers 31,700 square miles in area. That’s as bigger than South Carolina or Maine!
    • 600 gallons of water are needed to produce just one quarter-pound hamburger for your July 4th barbecue.
    • There are over 54,000 public water systems and municipalities in the United States.
    • It costs more than $3.5 billion to run operate America’s water systems every year.
    • The first water pipes in the U.S. were constructed from fire-charred bored logs.
    • The average American citizen uses 176 gallons of water per day.
    • 5 gallons of water are used every minute you’re in the shower. So, if everyone in America cut down their daily shower time by 2 seconds we would conserve 85 billion gallons of water every year.
    • More than 1/4 of Massachusetts and more than 2/5 of Hawaii are covered in water.
    • Ground water naturally occurs beneath the land surface across the country. The amount of fresh groundwater in the United States is 20 to 30 times larger than the amount of freshwater in all the lakes, rivers, and streams in the nation.
    • There are approximately 240,000 water main breaks per year in our country. Replacing every pipe would cost over $1 trillion.

Water is a precious resource, but many of us take it for granted until it’s in short supply or contaminated. Party stress-free this 4th of July and install a water filtration system that will protect your loved ones from chemicals and pathogens.
