The Importance of Hydration For Healthy Aging

I may be a professional cyclist, but another important part of my identity is that I’m in my early 40’s. As I age I have definitely noticed the changes in my body, my training style, and my overall health — while it’s a natural part of life, it’s also something us athletes should recognize and accommodate in our daily routines.

Be Proactive About Hydration as You Age

Even while entering this new phase of my life I strive to keep my performance at the highest level. This simply means that, in order to stay on top, I have to take care of my health at the highest quality level. I can’t afford to slack off or cut corners — your body can still accomplish outstanding things well into the old age, but it also is less forgiving if you don’t give your body what it needs to succeed.

Most importantly, this means keeping myself hydrated before, during, and after a race. Every time I train, every time I elevate my heart rate, I hydrate. But, maybe just as importantly, I stay hydrated in between races and training as well.

An unfortunate reality of aging is that as you age you lose lean muscle mass. This natural process, called sarcpenia, starts around age 30 and continues into old age. Depending on your genetics and fitness routine you can lose up to 30% of your muscle tissue during your lifetime, even if you work out regularly.

Your muscle tissue stores a large amount of water, and as you lose this muscle mass with age your body also loses important water storage. That’s why I drink more water as I get older! And for me drinking more water isn’t a problem — since I use Pelican Water’s whole house filtration system I have access to the cleanest, smoothest, and highest quality water 24/7 in the comfort of my own home.

    The Benefits of Filtered Water

Installing a water filter system at home was one of the smartest investments of my life. From filling my sports water botttles for a ride, making coffee, or simply cooking with pure filtered water, this one change has made a huge impact on my life.

Before relying on Pelican Water for in-home water filtration we used to give our family dog bottled water. We’re talking about a 65-pound pointer who drinks a lot — needless to say, buying all of that bottled water was incredibly expensive. Drinking filtered water has not only helped us. Even the dog benefits from Pelican Water!

We’ve taken the proper steps to totally eliminate plastic water bottles from our home by switching to using a water filtration system, and in the process we’ve been inspired to remove unnecessary and dangerous additives from our household. Investing in filtered water is great for your health, for your family, for your dog, for your wallet, and for the planet! It’s the ultimate win-win. Now remember if you’re starting to grey like me: keep hydrating and keep pushing!
