    Reduce Your Heart Attack Risk by 50% With Water

    For both men and women, heart disease is the leading cause of death for residents of the United States. Heart disease and poor heart health are responsible for more deaths per year annually than ever before, but with proper diet, exercise, and regular checkups, heart disease is largely preventable for most people.

    February is Heart Health Month, a time to bring awareness to the simple steps that your family can take to safeguard against the development of heart disease later in life. Started by The Heart Foundation, this month-long awareness campaign aims to help citizens make heart healthy choices as they get to know the risk factors and causes of the disease.

In addition to keeping you alert and improving overall function of your bodily systems, a new study details how water intake is one of the most important factors in reducing your risk for a heart attack or related coronary event.

    The study, published in The American Journal of Epidemiology, analyzed several factors over the course of six years in more than 20,000 subjects, tracking these different factors in relation to the subjects’ overall heart health. Out of the 8,280 men and 12,017 women who participated in the exhaustive study, 246 participants experienced “coronary heart disease events” in the six-year follow-up period after they began the study.

    The findings illuminate just how important water intake remains, especially in regards to heart health. Men who drank five or more glasses of water a day were 54% less likely to have experienced coronary heart disease than men who drank two or fewer glasses of water per day. For women, that number was still significant, at 41% less likely for those women who drank five or more glasses of water per day.

    The likelihood of a heart attack or similar event was even higher for subjects who substituted tea, juice, soda, or another type of drink for water. Women who consumed two glasses of a substance other than water a day and didn’t regularly consume water were 147% more likely to have a fatal heart attack than those women who drank five or more glasses of water per day.

    Many other factors were measured throughout the study, but water intake determined the risk of a fatal heart attack more than any other factor being considered during the study. Lead researcher Dr. Jacqueline Chan noted that this particular study was the “first study to record the association between high water intake and reduced risk of coronary heart disease,” and that, “[B]y drinking more plain water, healthy people… reduced their risk of dying from a heart attack by half or more.”

    This new study only confirms what your parents have always told you – you should drink more water. But now it’s a necessity in order to encourage better heart health and to prevent heart disease from developing later in your life. Train yourself to start drinking the recommended dose of water each day by filling up water to-go and taking it with you in a stainless steel bottle if you leave the house to go to work or school every day. It’s more difficult to regularly drink water if you don’t bring some with you.
