New Uses for Old Water Bottles

Viewed by many as a convenient way to stay hydrated, bottled water has a dark side. According to studies, eight in ten single-use U.S. water bottles become litter. In fact, American landfills are currently glutted with over 2 million tons of discarded plastic water bottles. What doesn’t find its way into landfills ultimately ends up in our waterways. According to the Ocean Conservatory, there are over 46,000 pieces of floating plastic per every square mile of the ocean. What’s more, there are countless more bottles beneath the water’s surface, where they will never degrade.

Making Use of Your Used Bottles

Sadly, only about one in five water bottles finds its way into the recycling bin. If you’re concerned about bottled water’s impact on the environment, you can help by consistently recycling your used bottles. You can also make use of your old water bottles, using the following creative ideas:

    Bird Feeders:

You can create an inexpensive bird feeder using an old water bottle by following these simple steps:

    • Poke a hole through both sides of the center of the bottle.
    • Insert a wooden spoon through the two holes to create a perch for the birds.
    • Cut a small hole above the spoon to allow seed to gently trickle onto the wide end.
    • Fill the bottle with birdseed and hang it vertically from a tree branch.

A used water bottle creates the perfect planter for new seedlings.

    • Hold the water bottle vertically and cut it in half at the center.
    • Invert the narrower half and fill it with potting soil.
    • Carefully remove the lid and place the filled half inside the bottom half, so the wide end is facing up.
    • Plant your seedling and place the bottle in direct sunlight.

Other Ways to Prevent Water Bottle Pollution

Many people also use old water bottles in craft projects that yield piggy banks, kid’s jewelry, food containers, and more. On the other hand, a growing number of people are choosing to do away with bottled water entirely in favor of self-maintaining, environmentally-friendly Pelican home water filters in conjunction with reusable sports bottles.
