Drinking Water Ban Hits Toledo, OH August 2

Toledo Ohio MapThe national spotlight shone on the benefits of home water disinfection August 2, when public safety officials in Toledo, Ohio issued a strong warning: Do not drink OR boil city water, due to dangerous toxicity. (Ed. note: By Aug. 4, the drinking ban had been lifted by the city.)

The city government revealed that several sample readings from the local water treatment plant showed dangerous levels of microcystin in the drinking water. The governor also declared a state of emergency in three counties.

Microcystins are produced by bacteria, and ingesting them can cause serious vomiting and diarrhea. The city told residents that boiling the water can make the problem worse, which led to a run on bottled water at grocery stores. The state government swung into action over the weekend, calling in the Ohio National Guard to provide potable water to those in need.

Toledo’s water flows from Lake Erie, which is known to contain high levels of algae and bacteria. Nitrogen and phosphorous, which are in fertilizers and sewage, feed the algae. The lake, which is much warmer in the summer, provides a perfect environment for microcystins to grow, as appeared to occur in this case.

How Home Water Disinfection Leads to Peace of Mind

The problem in Toledo was alarming, given that even boiling did not make the water suitable to drink. It is the latest example of how unsafe public water has become more commonplace in recent years across the US as our infrastructure and water lines age. These cases reveal that our local water authorities, even with the best of intentions, cannot always guarantee that drinking water is safe.

The water ban in Toledo highlights the fact that sometimes it is up to each of us to ensure the purity and safety of our water. This is when a water purification system, such as a Pelican Pro 6-Stage Reverse Osmosis (RO) system is so useful.

Reverse Osmosis, also known as hyperfiltration, is a process that reduces and removes harmful contaminants at the cellular level from the water supply. This water treatment process filters the undesirable particles using a semi-permeable RO membrane. A typical RO system will remove salt, colloids, and various metals and organic molecules down to a molecular weight of 100.

The Pelican Pro 6 provides your family with the highest quality drinking water at a reasonable cost. Its six-stage system will generate 30% more water flow than most competing systems, and the 50 GPD membrane will refill the storage tank quickly, so you always have plenty of clean water on hand.

Our RO system features the very latest in design and membrane technology, so water down the drain is reduced by 50%. This product is smaller and uses fewer manufacturing resources than most comparable RO systems, and also has a sixth stage filter that most competitors lack.

This system is simple to maintain and certified by the NSF to remove the following contaminants:

    • Arsenic V (pentavalent) 97.8%
    • Cysts >99.99%
    • Fluoride 96.30%
    • Lead 98.0%
    • TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) 96.50%

With water contamination dangers on the rise in America, it is more important than ever to ensure that your home’s water is as safe and clean as possible.  The Pelican Pro 6 is an effective and affordable safeguard in these uncertain times.*

*It should be noted that in extreme contamination cases such as in Toledo, Pelican advises that you still have your filtered water tested by the local government to ensure that it is safe to drink.
