Three Healthy Reasons to Switch from Plastic to Glass

One of the great pleasures we enjoy at Pelican Water is knowing our countertop and point-of-entry filtration systems deliver cleaner, crisper-tasting water to our customers. Free of water treatment byproducts and other chemicals known to pollute public drinking water, filtered water is a great foundation for any healthy lifestyle.

If, however, you drink filtered water from plastic containers, you won’t be reaping all the health benefits. Plastic, despite its ubiquitous nature, increasingly looks like one of the greatest missteps of the twentieth century. Not only is it terrible for the environment, plastic has a number of negative effects on the body. Choosing glass over plastic isn’t just about being green — it’s about being healthy.

Non-Toxic Glass vs. the Uncertainty of Plastic

Glass is a non-toxic material humans have used for thousands of years, made from a combination of equally non-toxic substances, most often sand, soda ash, and limestone. The same cannot be said for plastic.

Manufacturers produce plastic from a wide variety of synthetic chemicals, and we lack a full understanding of how these chemicals affect the human body. We do know chemicals used in plastic leach from plastic containers and bottles into the contents within. The most well-known is BPA, a hormone disruptor linked to multiple health problems, including hormone regulation, immune system problems, and infertility.

    Bacteria, Glass, and Plastic

With repeated use, the surface of plastic bottles degrades and becomes porous, making it easier for the bottle to absorb bacteria. If you’re using a filtration system with ultraviolet protection, you’re killing the microorganisms in your water before they reach your family. Pouring filtered water into a container that may already contain bacteria is self-defeating.

Glass, however, has a glossy, non-porous surface that prevents the absorption of bacteria and can be cleaned or sterilized without degrading the surface of the container.

    Enhanced Flavor

You’re more likely to consume healthier foods and drinks if you enjoy the flavor. Pelican’s beautifully crafted glass table bottles allow you to fully appreciate the taste of our filtered water for a simple reason: Glass bottles impart no residual odor to their contents. Water consumed from plastic bottles has a plastic aftertaste that many find unpleasant and incorrectly assume is part of water’s natural taste. It isn’t; it’s the taste of synthetic and potentially harmful chemicals.

When it comes down to it, choose glass. It’s better for you, it’s better for your children, and it’s better for the environment.
