Water is at the top of the list of environmental issues

America’s Top “Green Concerns” are Water-Based

Access to clean drinking water is the number one environmental concern in the U.S., according to a 2015 Gallop poll. Water-related issues dominate the list of environmental problems worrying Americans.

Fifty-five percent of those surveyed worry “a great deal” about pollution in drinking water, while 53 percent express similar concern about contamination of soil and water by toxic waste. Another 47 percent of Americans worry about river, lake, and reservoir pollution, with 46 percent concerned with the nation’s ability to maintain a supply of fresh water for household needs.

The fifth most worrisome environmental concern is air pollution while animal extinction rates, global warming, and rainforest destruction rank lower.

Why is water so high on Americans’ list of environmental concerns? In part, it may be that media coverage of the California drought has water on everyone’s mind. Perhaps it’s because the threat to clean water has an immediacy that rainforest destruction and animal extinction lack: Our lives might not change much with the extinction of an animal species, but they would with a change in water supply.

Whatever the reason, we’re seeing an increase in water conservation projects and a rise in public concern, which is a good thing. We’re past the point where we can take freshwater for granted. With our public water infrastructure aging at an alarming rate, we need public awareness focused on demanding change and revitalization. As we’ve seen in the past, where public opinion goes politicians follow. The fastest way to encourage infrastructure restoration is to make it a priority among voters.

While a serious re-evaluation of public water safety and infrastructure is long overdue, water conservation really starts at home. By replacing an old salt-based water softener with a Pelican NaturSoft® Water Softener Alternative with UV Protection, you’ll save up to 6,200 gallons of water a year while also killing 99.9 percent of bacteria and eliminate 99.6% of hard water scale. And by installing a Pelican 3-Stage Filter, you will waste no water while still getting 1,500 gallons of filtered water with on-demand filtration.

We can’t solve the world’s environmental problems overnight, but with Pelican’s family of water softeners and filtration systems, you can reduce water usage while safeguarding your family from waterborne contaminants.
