Tannins can cause yellow water and yellow staining on fabrics and fixtures. Tannins measuring 0.5 PPM or higher may cause staining and/or interference with various water treatment processes.

Note: A Tannin filter will not remove or kill microorganisims that can contribute to water with higher turibity levels. If these issues exist, please contact customer service.

How Does A Softener Work? back to top

There Are 3 Important Steps To Softening

  1. Backwashing Phase: This removes dirt from the mineral tank and is part of the regeneration process
  2. Regeneration Phase: The mineral tank is recharged with sodium from the brine tank solution and displaces calcium and magnesium, which is then washed down the drain during the Backwashing Phase.
  3. Rinse Phase: The mineral tank is rinsed with fresh water and loads the brine tank so that it is ready for the next cycle.

As water passes through the mineral tank, the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions are lost to negatively charged plastic beads. The brine tank holds a solution of water and salt that will flush the mineral tank and replace the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium. Recharging cycles are controlled by the meter on the top of the tank (normally once every 7 days).

Excellent Company!

First, I rarely write reviews on products or companies but I was so impressed with Pelican's products and services that I felt compelled to do this. I spent weeks researching other companies and products, talking with several of them on the phone. After comparing all of the details, I decided to go with Pelican. We had our water tested and only needed a softener and UV light to kill bacteria. Our well water is very good and we didn't need a carbon filter. Pelican acknowledged this right away while competitors tried to sell me a filter as well. I'm very happy with the system that has been provided and the extended life I'll enjoy for my water-source appliances. Customer service from this company is top-notch and they make the whole buying and installation experience easy. Don't waste your time looking at anyone else.

As advertised

System continues to work well, and as advertised. We change our sediment filter every 6 to 9 months, and changed the charcoal at about 3 years. Our system treats all domestic water, and our landscape irrigation emitters. Significant reduction in scale at faucets at landscape emitters. The other day we had guests at our home, and I parked my car in front of a neighbors house. I was shocked to see the mineral deposits on my car from a bit of irrigation over-spray from their untreated water during the night. No such deposits around our house, at our shower heads, in our coffee pot, or even in our recirculating water-wall fountain. Thank you, Pelican.

Solid sales/customer service

I spoke with Phil on the phone and received helpful information regarding the NS3 and local installers in my area while researching what unit to purchase. I later purchased the NS3 with Phil's assistance and had additional questions quickly answered. Easy, simple process.

Wonderful!!

What a Blessing! On a Saturday afternoon while my plumber is replacing the 2nd heating element at our rental house in 6 months due to heavy sediment {just replaced hot water tank last year & 2 other times in the last 9yrs)--I got online & stumbled on Pelican's website. I called and got "Phil". Thank God!! I explained my situation & he directed me to what system I needed, he is so knowledgeable!! The best part was he recommended the less expensive system, based on our well GPM-instead of upselling me!! Integrity & honesty is so rare these days, & he showed true concern & helpfulness. His knowledge of plumbing, wells & water tables is amazing! He also advised us how to install it over online chat (fittings and all! I am a customer for life. He is saving me so much money in the long run! Thank you Phil, you're a wonderful person-you made my weekend! Lisa Frye

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If I am on a sodium-restricted diet or suffer from hypertension is there a substitute for salt that I can add to the Pelican Water Softeners?
Yes, You can use potassium chloride instead of salt. The benefit is that you will be adding potassium to your water instead of sodium. Potassium chloride is a more expensive alternative but well worth the cost when weighing the benefits.

Q. What type of salt should I use in the Pelican Water Softeners?
It is recommended that coarse salt be used, which most grocery stores carry in bulk. Block salt should never be used.

Q. Will I notice a pressure loss after installing a Pelican Water Softener?
With all brands of water softeners there will be a pressure drop. The Pelican Advantage Series Water Softeners are of the highest quality available on the market therefore the pressure drop will be very low compared to most other brands..

Q. Can the Pelican Water Softeners drain line be drained into my septic system and what type of affect will it have on the drain field?
According to the Water Quality Association Technical Papers concerning septic tanks, etc.: Concerns about salt and soil absorption rates were dispelled. The increased sodium content in the tanks discharge was shown to have no detrimental effect on the soil's ability to absorb water in a normal drain field. Interestingly, certain soil conditions benefited from it. Additionally, when the softener's calcium-rich regeneration backwash emptied into the septic system, the discharge could actually improve the soils percolation the conclusion drawn from these tests is that the softened water is not harmful to a normally operating septic system or drain field.

Q. Can the drain line be located above the softener?
As long as the water pressure at the softener is not less than 40 PSI and the run of the drain line does not exceed 15', your discharge line may be elevated up to 4' above the system. For each additional 10 PSI of water supply the line can be elevated an additional 2'.

Q. Is softened water recommended for use on my plants or lawn?
If you are using sodium chloride to regenerate you resin, overtime, softened water could be harmful to your plants and other vegetation. It is recommended that the outside faucets be bypassed from the softener.

Q. How much salt will I have to add to the Pelican Water Softener?
A typical home with a family of 4 with 2.5 bathrooms and a hardness of 10 will require a 32,000 grains softener that will regenerate every 11 days. The softener uses about 9 lbs of salt per regeneration, so if your brine tank is full (400lbs) from the start, you will not add salt for about 10 months.

Q. Do I need to know what size my plumbing fittings are before I order the Pelican Water Softener?
No, the Pelican Water Softener System comes complete with ¾" and 1" copper and CPVC plumbing fittings and also a 50' drain line for your convenience.
