People who choose premium, choose Pelican!

Tannins can cause yellow water and yellow staining on fabrics and fixtures. Tannins measuring 0.5 PPM or higher may cause staining and/or interference with various water treatment processes.

Note: A Tannin filter will not remove or kill microorganisims that can contribute to water with higher turibity levels. If these issues exist, please contact customer service.

How Does A Softener Work? back to top

There Are 3 Important Steps To Softening

  1. Backwashing Phase: This removes dirt from the mineral tank and is part of the regeneration process
  2. Regeneration Phase: The mineral tank is recharged with sodium from the brine tank solution and displaces calcium and magnesium, which is then washed down the drain during the Backwashing Phase.
  3. Rinse Phase: The mineral tank is rinsed with fresh water and loads the brine tank so that it is ready for the next cycle.

As water passes through the mineral tank, the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions are lost to negatively charged plastic beads. The brine tank holds a solution of water and salt that will flush the mineral tank and replace the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium. Recharging cycles are controlled by the meter on the top of the tank (normally once every 7 days).

Amazing Product and Service

I recently discovered that the water in my house is extremely hard and was the cause of significant damage to appliances as well as staining of fixtures, basins, and dishes. I contacted Pelican Water and spoke with Patrick who helped me understand everything I needed to know about hard water and how the NaturSoft system works. After researching different types of water softeners I came to the conclusion that the NaturSoft best fit what I wanted. I wanted a system that softened my water without adding salt or potassium to the water, that required limited ongoing maintenance and expense (only requires a pre-filter change every 6-9 months), that left beneficial minerals in the water, that did not waste water, and that helps reverse the damage caused by hard water. I installed the NaturSoft and immediately noticed that the sink basins I had to regularly clean with vinegar and baking soda to remove hard water stains actually stay clean now! Within a few days of installing the NaturSoft I could see a significant amount of scale buildup dissolving in my dishwasher and the buildup continues to dissolve as time goes on. The water in my house feels and tastes the same as it did before installing the NaturSoft yet I no longer have a problem with mineral scale. It is also worth noting that I have no previous plumbing experience and the NaturSoft was simple and inexpensive to install myself. I had to do some online research to understand how the plumbing in my house works but after I read and learned a bit I was able to get the NaturSoft working without any problems; it took me less than two hours to install the NaturSoft which I think is pretty good for a first-time plumber. Thank you Pelican for helping me solve a big problem simply and affordably! A special thanks to Patrick for answering so many questions, being so responsive, and for all of your help.

me and my dogs are happy

I'm a real skeptic because of deals gone bad but the pelican made me a believer. I' m on a well and when I bought the house there was yellow iron marks in the tub. Gone. The water is so soft and clean my dogs and I can't get enough. The well is spring fed so my water tastes better than bought water. Sometimes I just stand under the shower with my mouth open and take it all in. Changing the filter is easy and no drain or electric is a real bonus. I give a real thumbs up to Pelican.

About Pelican

I am not a newcomer to Pelican systems. We had a whole house filter system installed in our last home and couldn't have been happier with it. We recently moved into a home that has one of those "salt box" softener systems and a reverse osmosis lash-up. We started moving in on Monday and I ordered our PSE 1800 on Tuesday. The sales personnel were absolutely superb! I would expect nothing less from Pelican. If you need a water system, buy one from Pelican!

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If I am on a sodium-restricted diet or suffer from hypertension is there a substitute for salt that I can add to the Pelican Water Softeners?
Yes, You can use potassium chloride instead of salt. The benefit is that you will be adding potassium to your water instead of sodium. Potassium chloride is a more expensive alternative but well worth the cost when weighing the benefits.

Q. What type of salt should I use in the Pelican Water Softeners?
It is recommended that coarse salt be used, which most grocery stores carry in bulk. Block salt should never be used.

Q. Will I notice a pressure loss after installing a Pelican Water Softener?
With all brands of water softeners there will be a pressure drop. The Pelican Advantage Series Water Softeners are of the highest quality available on the market therefore the pressure drop will be very low compared to most other brands..

Q. Can the Pelican Water Softeners drain line be drained into my septic system and what type of affect will it have on the drain field?
According to the Water Quality Association Technical Papers concerning septic tanks, etc.: Concerns about salt and soil absorption rates were dispelled. The increased sodium content in the tanks discharge was shown to have no detrimental effect on the soil's ability to absorb water in a normal drain field. Interestingly, certain soil conditions benefited from it. Additionally, when the softener's calcium-rich regeneration backwash emptied into the septic system, the discharge could actually improve the soils percolation the conclusion drawn from these tests is that the softened water is not harmful to a normally operating septic system or drain field.

Q. Can the drain line be located above the softener?
As long as the water pressure at the softener is not less than 40 PSI and the run of the drain line does not exceed 15', your discharge line may be elevated up to 4' above the system. For each additional 10 PSI of water supply the line can be elevated an additional 2'.

Q. Is softened water recommended for use on my plants or lawn?
If you are using sodium chloride to regenerate you resin, overtime, softened water could be harmful to your plants and other vegetation. It is recommended that the outside faucets be bypassed from the softener.

Q. How much salt will I have to add to the Pelican Water Softener?
A typical home with a family of 4 with 2.5 bathrooms and a hardness of 10 will require a 32,000 grains softener that will regenerate every 11 days. The softener uses about 9 lbs of salt per regeneration, so if your brine tank is full (400lbs) from the start, you will not add salt for about 10 months.

Q. Do I need to know what size my plumbing fittings are before I order the Pelican Water Softener?
No, the Pelican Water Softener System comes complete with ¾" and 1" copper and CPVC plumbing fittings and also a 50' drain line for your convenience.
