Tannins can cause yellow water and yellow staining on fabrics and fixtures. Tannins measuring 0.5 PPM or higher may cause staining and/or interference with various water treatment processes.

Note: A Tannin filter will not remove or kill microorganisims that can contribute to water with higher turibity levels. If these issues exist, please contact customer service.

How Does A Softener Work? back to top

There Are 3 Important Steps To Softening

  1. Backwashing Phase: This removes dirt from the mineral tank and is part of the regeneration process
  2. Regeneration Phase: The mineral tank is recharged with sodium from the brine tank solution and displaces calcium and magnesium, which is then washed down the drain during the Backwashing Phase.
  3. Rinse Phase: The mineral tank is rinsed with fresh water and loads the brine tank so that it is ready for the next cycle.

As water passes through the mineral tank, the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions are lost to negatively charged plastic beads. The brine tank holds a solution of water and salt that will flush the mineral tank and replace the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium. Recharging cycles are controlled by the meter on the top of the tank (normally once every 7 days).

The best available for household water usage.

After 2 yrs. of use, we have noticed about a 30% increase in water flow due to removal of "stuff" in water lines - Especially for showers - and salt removed. Saves substantial money compared to other systems used in homes. Have 2 homes and both are equipped with the PSE1800/PSE2000 units.

Great Product

We love our new unit and it has cut down on the work I have to do to keep the calcium deposits off of sinks, glass shower doors, and inside toilets. Having a Bed and Breakfast I do a lot of cleaning and I would recommend the Pelican Water System to anyone who has hard water.

Awesome System

We are very happy with the overall performance of the PSE 2000 system. It is very refreshing to see the water in our home crystal clear. No more dry itchy skin. Highly recommend this system to anyone looking to resolve any water problems in their homes. The customer service received from Mark Hughes was excellent. He is very knowledgeable and great to talk with.

Great Household Addition

We're very satisfied with our whole house carbon filtering. We didn't want to shower with chlorine and wanted to do everything we could to insure the purest water both for ourselves and our daughter and grandchildren. We live in a duplex and now have peace of mind re. water quality. We also purchased the Pelican RO system to remove fluoride. I installed that system under our sink. The installation of both units was straight forward without any leaks. I would recommend buying the fitting accessory kit along with the PC600/PC1000. It made things a lot easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If I am on a sodium-restricted diet or suffer from hypertension is there a substitute for salt that I can add to the Pelican Water Softeners?
Yes, You can use potassium chloride instead of salt. The benefit is that you will be adding potassium to your water instead of sodium. Potassium chloride is a more expensive alternative but well worth the cost when weighing the benefits.

Q. What type of salt should I use in the Pelican Water Softeners?
It is recommended that coarse salt be used, which most grocery stores carry in bulk. Block salt should never be used.

Q. Will I notice a pressure loss after installing a Pelican Water Softener?
With all brands of water softeners there will be a pressure drop. The Pelican Advantage Series Water Softeners are of the highest quality available on the market therefore the pressure drop will be very low compared to most other brands..

Q. Can the Pelican Water Softeners drain line be drained into my septic system and what type of affect will it have on the drain field?
According to the Water Quality Association Technical Papers concerning septic tanks, etc.: Concerns about salt and soil absorption rates were dispelled. The increased sodium content in the tanks discharge was shown to have no detrimental effect on the soil's ability to absorb water in a normal drain field. Interestingly, certain soil conditions benefited from it. Additionally, when the softener's calcium-rich regeneration backwash emptied into the septic system, the discharge could actually improve the soils percolation the conclusion drawn from these tests is that the softened water is not harmful to a normally operating septic system or drain field.

Q. Can the drain line be located above the softener?
As long as the water pressure at the softener is not less than 40 PSI and the run of the drain line does not exceed 15', your discharge line may be elevated up to 4' above the system. For each additional 10 PSI of water supply the line can be elevated an additional 2'.

Q. Is softened water recommended for use on my plants or lawn?
If you are using sodium chloride to regenerate you resin, overtime, softened water could be harmful to your plants and other vegetation. It is recommended that the outside faucets be bypassed from the softener.

Q. How much salt will I have to add to the Pelican Water Softener?
A typical home with a family of 4 with 2.5 bathrooms and a hardness of 10 will require a 32,000 grains softener that will regenerate every 11 days. The softener uses about 9 lbs of salt per regeneration, so if your brine tank is full (400lbs) from the start, you will not add salt for about 10 months.

Q. Do I need to know what size my plumbing fittings are before I order the Pelican Water Softener?
No, the Pelican Water Softener System comes complete with ¾" and 1" copper and CPVC plumbing fittings and also a 50' drain line for your convenience.
