Tannins can cause yellow water and yellow staining on fabrics and fixtures. Tannins measuring 0.5 PPM or higher may cause staining and/or interference with various water treatment processes.

Note: A Tannin filter will not remove or kill microorganisims that can contribute to water with higher turibity levels. If these issues exist, please contact customer service.

How Does A Softener Work? back to top

There Are 3 Important Steps To Softening

  1. Backwashing Phase: This removes dirt from the mineral tank and is part of the regeneration process
  2. Regeneration Phase: The mineral tank is recharged with sodium from the brine tank solution and displaces calcium and magnesium, which is then washed down the drain during the Backwashing Phase.
  3. Rinse Phase: The mineral tank is rinsed with fresh water and loads the brine tank so that it is ready for the next cycle.

As water passes through the mineral tank, the positively charged calcium and magnesium ions are lost to negatively charged plastic beads. The brine tank holds a solution of water and salt that will flush the mineral tank and replace the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium. Recharging cycles are controlled by the meter on the top of the tank (normally once every 7 days).

Very Pleased

I am very happy with my new whole house water system that takes out not only chlorine, but fluoride too. My hands are not dry from doing dishes like they used to be. My skin feels so soft. And, the water is delicious to drink. There is nothing better to have in this world than good water. May I add?....the Pelican representative was a man of his word. Pelican is a business that you can trust.

Wonderful Solution

Salesperson, Patrick was very helpful in helping me decide on the proper unit(s) for my home. My initial problem was mineral buildup on shower heads and faucets. Plus the hardness and quality of the water varied as the municipal supply changed over from reservoir to well water during the year. With the new Pelican system I don't worry about hardness or impurities and get a much better tasting supply of water for my home. Thank you for a wonderful product...

Happy Customer

Because I have more than one Pelican product, it's just easier to address the wholesale satisfaction my family is getting from the systems. The Whole House Carbon Filter to the Shower Head with Aromatherapy systems are great!

Great Experience

I live in an area with very hard water and noticeably high levels of chlorine. One of my children battles eczema and there are countless articles about the negative effects of showering/bathing in chlorinated water—for everyone, but particularly for people with health issues. I had poked around for a couple of years but ultimately I chose the Pelican system because it does not require a system flush (i.e., water waste) and because of the significantly positive reviews. This system is fantastic and delivers on both quality and taste. We noticed results immediately but once the carbon tank has been active for 30+ days you really start to see the benefits. Our water tastes better than bottled water and no longer smells of chlorine. An added benefit is the significant reduction in hard water deposits we used to see on our fixtures and shower doors not to mention how much softer our water has become. Lastly, I have been able to let my son sit and play in the bathtub knowing that he isn’t sitting in harmful water and we have not seen one flare-up since our system was installed. I would absolutely recommend this company. A+.

great product, easy install

I ordered the combo series PSE 1800/PSE2000 along with post hot water filter after the tankless gas heater. everything was very easy to install. water seems great. I love most though is not going through the hassle of adding salt. It saves on electric and doesn't waste any water

Big difference in cleaning

We have had several water salt softners over the years, but had gone about six months without one when our last one broke down. It has been wonderful to get back soft water with a no hassle system. What a blessing not to have to get heavy salt bags and refill a tank. Sinks and toilets are staying cleaner longer and we are using less cleaning products.

Great feeling and smelling water

I live in Asheville, NC which is supposed to have some of the best water in all of NC, however, the water coming into my home consistently had a strong chlorine smell and taste. However, once our whole home filter was installed we could tell a big difference. It even feels different to take a shower; feels more like fresh lake water than pool water. Hard to explain, but my wife and I are very pleased with the purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. If I am on a sodium-restricted diet or suffer from hypertension is there a substitute for salt that I can add to the Pelican Water Softeners?
Yes, You can use potassium chloride instead of salt. The benefit is that you will be adding potassium to your water instead of sodium. Potassium chloride is a more expensive alternative but well worth the cost when weighing the benefits.

Q. What type of salt should I use in the Pelican Water Softeners?
It is recommended that coarse salt be used, which most grocery stores carry in bulk. Block salt should never be used.

Q. Will I notice a pressure loss after installing a Pelican Water Softener?
With all brands of water softeners there will be a pressure drop. The Pelican Advantage Series Water Softeners are of the highest quality available on the market therefore the pressure drop will be very low compared to most other brands..

Q. Can the Pelican Water Softeners drain line be drained into my septic system and what type of affect will it have on the drain field?
According to the Water Quality Association Technical Papers concerning septic tanks, etc.: Concerns about salt and soil absorption rates were dispelled. The increased sodium content in the tanks discharge was shown to have no detrimental effect on the soil's ability to absorb water in a normal drain field. Interestingly, certain soil conditions benefited from it. Additionally, when the softener's calcium-rich regeneration backwash emptied into the septic system, the discharge could actually improve the soils percolation the conclusion drawn from these tests is that the softened water is not harmful to a normally operating septic system or drain field.

Q. Can the drain line be located above the softener?
As long as the water pressure at the softener is not less than 40 PSI and the run of the drain line does not exceed 15', your discharge line may be elevated up to 4' above the system. For each additional 10 PSI of water supply the line can be elevated an additional 2'.

Q. Is softened water recommended for use on my plants or lawn?
If you are using sodium chloride to regenerate you resin, overtime, softened water could be harmful to your plants and other vegetation. It is recommended that the outside faucets be bypassed from the softener.

Q. How much salt will I have to add to the Pelican Water Softener?
A typical home with a family of 4 with 2.5 bathrooms and a hardness of 10 will require a 32,000 grains softener that will regenerate every 11 days. The softener uses about 9 lbs of salt per regeneration, so if your brine tank is full (400lbs) from the start, you will not add salt for about 10 months.

Q. Do I need to know what size my plumbing fittings are before I order the Pelican Water Softener?
No, the Pelican Water Softener System comes complete with ¾" and 1" copper and CPVC plumbing fittings and also a 50' drain line for your convenience.
