How it works back to top

The WF6/WF10 Iron Series utilizes a 5 step system to oxidize and remove the iron from the water, clean up taste and order, and soften your water to make it the best water you could have.
Whole House Iron Systems

Stage 1 - Pelican Sediment Filter
All Pelican Carbon Series Premium Whole House Water Filters come with a 5 micron pre-filter system that helps protect your new filter system and your home appliances from the damaging effects of sediment (dirt & debris) build up. The sediment in city or well water can clog faucets, damage appliances and even change the taste of your drinking water. The pre-filter system filters down to 20 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair or 5 microns in size. Learn More.

Stage 2 - Pelican Chlorination System - Performance beyond the competition!
Installed directly in the water supply line, the injector operates without electricity, using water pressure as the power source. The water drives the injector, which pulls the required percentage of concentrate directly from the chemical solution tank. Inside the patented mixing chamber, the concentrate is mixed with the water, and the water pressure forces the mixed solution downstream. The amount of concentrate will be directly proportional to the volume of fluid entering the injector, regardless of variations in flow or pressure.

Stage 3 - Greensand Plus Iron Removal
Stage 3 traps the iron with a filter media and gravel under bed then flushes it out with the backwash system. This Improved version of greensand improves its reduction of iron and manganese. The Greensand-Plus filter provides an excellent long-term, relatively low-maintenance solution. GreensandPlus has received the WQA Gold Seal Certification for compliance with NSF/ANSI 61.

Stage 4 - Carbon Filtration
The premium carbon filtration system is designed/developed to significantly reduce chlorine, chloramines, sediment and/or particulate matter, tastes, and odors that may be present in your water. This deluxe, high-capacity, virtually maintenance-free system is easily installed in any home and has a 600,000.1,000,000 gal/5-year Performance Guarantee, the best value on any whole house water filtration system in America!

Stage 5 - Salt-Free Water Softening

The NaturSoft system prevents the hardness minerals in your water from forming hard water scale in your plumbing, preventing the clogging of shower heads, faucets and loss of water pressure. The Pelican NaturSoft system also actively removes any existing hard water scale formation in pipes and water heaters.

The Pelican NaturSoft system utilizes a commercial grade media granule, offering you superior performance and unlimited lifespan. Over the years Pelican Natursoft systems have been installed in thousands of residential and commercial applications with some larger commercial systems having used in excess of 250 million gallons without needing replacement. That is performance unmatched on the market today!

a very happy pelican owner

my water filtration system was installed in sept. of 2013 by a very experienced plumber. He had never put one of these together before but with his vast plumbing experience and a well put-together manual he was able to do an excellent job.At first I was intimidated by it but after a short time ,I figured it out.In may of 2014 I changed the pre-filter and kit "A".I had some small problems with the procedure but with the help of your customer service I had no problem after.I'm very happy.. THANK YOU

Iron free

They designed a system just for my water that had an unheard of 14.75 ppm. I did alot of research before picking Pelican and I have had the best service and products. You know you live in the sticks when the neighbors would rather see your filtration system than your new home. One of my neighbors have already purchased a whole home system and I have another neighbor fixing to do the same thing. Great price and even better customer service. Thanks Steve!

clear water

Steve put together a system just for my needs and I had 14.7 ppm of iron and most systems will not handle more than 10 ppm. My neighbors all said I would never have ice in my ice maker because the water is so bad out there. Folks I have ice and my water went from rusty orange to beautiful clear water. One of the best things about Pelican is you can talk to a person not a machine unless it is after hours and they work very hard to get you answers.

Happy Customer

After suffering from horrible water pressure and stained toilets and dirty water, a plumber recommended a water softening system due to all of the iron in our well. Pelican was referred to us, and after speaking with customer service we ended up spending more money that originally planned and instead purchased the iron filtration system. I am happy with my purchase as the customer service rep was so knowledgeable and wasn't high pressure at all. He clearly explained in great detail what would be the best system for my money, taking into account that I didn't just want a band aid on the problem, and that I have a young baby that I am bathing in my water. I feel very confident in my investment, and our system is working beautifully. In regards to installation, the support and clear instructions made what seemed to be an overwhelming task a breeze.

Iron & Manganese Filter

With a good plumber the filter went in very well and it has been working well for about a week now. It seems to be removing the iron and manganese from our water. Whenever I had a question, Steve Engel quickly returned my call and answered my questions satisfactorily. The product also arrived when they said it would. Overall, very pleased.

I installed my Pelican Whole House WF4 water system July 2011. I have been more than satisfied with this water system. It is simple to maintain with only adding Bleach and water to the reserve tank about once a month and changing the filter about every six months. The water quality has exceeded my expectations with taste and clarity. We never need to clean the toilets with chemicals as this water system leaves no stains, therefore we save on cleaning chemicals and efforts to keep them clean. Mark Hughes with customer service has always been very courteous and professional with any questions I have had. He is very knowledgeable of the Pelican water systems. I would highly recommend the Pelican Water system to anyone needing a water filter system for their home.

Rust Free for 1 year

The Pelican water treatment system is amazing! The Iron in my water was off the charts and my ph level was off far enough to be considered dangerous! My service rep Mark directed me to purchase exactly what I needed and nothing more. While the other guys were saying I needed a water softner, Mark suggested removing the Iron and adjusting the Ph levels. Turned out he was right my water was naturally soft. No more salt bags. Its pretty cool when my family from the city prefers my tap water to their city water!

So far so good!

Have recently ordered W4 system for my home. It should be delivered in the next week or so. Just wanted to say that my experience with Pelican Water so far has been exceptional. Their customer service was great. Mark was on the phone with me for a while going over water test and explaining what system I would need and why. He answered any questions that I had and since I am going to install the system myself, he went above and beyond to go over diagrams of how to install it. He also gave me his direct # and told me that if I had any problems when I started the installation to call him and he would help me with anything I needed. Looking forward to it's arrival.

Immediate Difference..

I purchased the WF4 iron and manganese filter last month and it was installed 11/15/10. I was immediately able to taste the difference in the water, which is now delicious! And now my clothes won't have yellow stains on them. My handiman, who was trained by his plumber father, installed the system with little difficulty. The system takes up a lot of wall space, but it's definitely worth it. Do allow for the extra space when planning the filter's location in your garage or elsewhere.

Pelican Iron System

Hi Richard, I have just returned from vacation. It is a pleasure to return to crystal clear water. This is the best water system I have ever had in 14 Years here. It was a large investment having a new well drilled and the pelican water treatment installed; but it seems to be worth every dollar. We can now drink the tap water and the coffee's taste is noticeably better. My entire system is working great. You have been exceptionally helpful during both the design and installation phases. I have been a dentist for 20 years; your customer service is one of the best I have ever dealt with. Hope you enjoy the holiday season. Talk to you again soon, Bye.

Perfect Solution

We had horrific water .It was hard(we thought) loaded with iron and other undesirable minerals. We contacted Richie at Water Filter USA and explained our problem. From that point on everything was handled professionally. They explained that to solve our problem we had to get our water professionally tested. They set this up with an independent lab. Our results came back(to them and us)and showed we did not have HARD WATER but we did have a tremendous amount of iron and manganese in our water. Richie recommended the Pelican WF8 water system that removes Iron and Maganese. We installed the system on December 13,2010 and can not be more satisfied. The difference in the quality of our water is unbelievable, no more rust stains, the soap and salt residue rinses off in the shower. AND I DON'T HAVE TO KEEP ADDING THOSE 40LB. BAGS OF SALT EVERY FEW WEEKS. Gene Lollo Trenton NJ

About the DVGW back to top

The DVGW is an organization that establishes standards and test protocols. It also approves or certifies laboratories to then conduct testing according to those standards and protocols. The same can be said for NSF in the US.

The DVGW is located in Bonn, Germany. It has its own laboratory by the name of TZW located in Karlruhe, Germany. Beyond that, the DVGW has certified some twenty plus privately owned laboratories throughout central Europe who are authorized to conduct certification testing. The same holds true for NSF. It has its own laboratory and those certified by NSF like WQA, UL and Pace Laboratories to name a few.

The DVGW also issues test marks or certifications (i.e. the WQA equivalent of a "Gold Seal") like the "W510" standard. Their internal code for the W510 certification is "9191 - Kalkschutzanlage" (scale protection device). In order to obtain the W510 certification seal or certification mark, the applicant has to pass a total of three test protocols: Efficacy (W512), material safety and structural integrity.

DVGW W 510 Standard back to top

The DVGW 9191 - Anti-Scale standard uses the worlds strictest guidelines to determine the effectiveness of a system to prevent scale using Worksheet W 510. W510 combines 3 testing requirements that all systems must pass: 1) Structural Integrity, 2) Microbiological Testing (W 270 and KTW tests) and 3) Performance in Scale Prevention (W512). Unlike the NSF acceptable passing level of 50% for performance, the DVGW protocol for scale prevention performance (W 512) requires 80% or better to pass. In order to obtain a certification under DW-9191 with test report W 510 you must pass at least 4 separate tests, plus the W 510 requirements. Pelican has passed all 5 requirements to be listed as a DW-9191 certified product.

DVGW W 512 - Performance Testing back to top

The DVGW W 512 standard is the most stringent of its type in the world. In order to be subjected to the most rigorous test protocol possible, sparing no expense, we have commissioned to have our equipment performance not tested in the US , but tested by a DVGW certified laboratory in the home country of the standard itself, Germany. The test aims to simulate real life conditions over an exceptionally long period of time using some extremely challenging natural well water.

DVGW W 270 & KTW Assessments - Microbiological Testing back to top

To protect drinking water from microorganisms on non-metallic materials, the DVGW indicated the necessity for adherence to the requirements set out in the DVGW Code of Practice W 270 "The growth of microorganisms on materials intended for use in drinking water systems - examination and assessment!". DVGW also established KTW Assessments which test all plastic parts, coatings, rubber and lubricants to UBA and BGA guidelines to ensure chemicals are not leeched into your water.

Why we publish our test data and others do not back to top

True in both Europe and the US, a certification is a pass/fail proposition. The certification states that the applicant has passed and fulfilled the requirements of the standard. Individual test results are not published in either jurisdiction. The reason for that is due to the minimum requirement to past those tests. For example, NSF 42 requires at least 50% reduction in order to pass. That means a product claiming certification may only remove 50% at the end of filter life. As a result most companies wont publish their test data, fearing the consumer seeing their low results at end of filter life.

Pelican publishes its test data because we acheived a 99.6% scale prevention rating during the entire length of the test. No other salt free system has received a certified rating that high.

Note: Just 1/4" of scale build-up can increase heating costs by 40% or more. Observe the scale build up on the untreated side after only 3 days of operation.

A salt free water softener is any device, substance or process that when applied will result in any, or all of the following benefits to varying degrees in the areas of scale reduction, improved cleaning / housekeeping and subjective improvements in personal care without the use of sodium/potassium chloride.

Boiler System - The photographs back to top

The pictures show the heat exchanger with the insulation removed and the core / heating coil freshly pulled. As one can plainly see, there are absolutely no scale deposits on the element or the heat exchanger pipe. On the bottom of the pipe's interior, there is a small amount of a silt-like deposit of the calcium carbonate crystals produced by the NaturSoft media. The stainless steel surfaces of the heating coil have a slightly dull look which is due to a few micro micron thick haze of 'soft scale' during the process. This deposit is easily wiped off with a cloth or flushed away with a pressure washer . without the need for chemicals of any kind. It is the only evidence of hardness minerals that could be found after one full year of operation.

Boiler System - Superior Performance Results back to top

Pelican Water Systems proudly introduces NaturSoft media the next generation in hardness control. Years in development and tested in the U.S. under harsh real life conditions the NaturSoft media exceeded all expectations and delivered amazing results. NaturSoft media is produced exclusively in the United States by Pelican Water Systems.

The new era of technology has made many advances in water treatment possible in residential as well as commercial applications. NaturSoft has proven to be very effective in both applications even at high temperatures and hardness levels. The NaturSoft System represents the superior alternative with respect to dealing with the symptoms of water hardness without resorting to ion exchange (salt or potassium) based systems. The commercial grade media is now available for residential consumers. What you will read in this story is an example of commercial water treatment using NaturSoft media. This represents an extreme case far beyond any residential demand or application. The boiler/heat exchanger is just a larger version of a residential hot water heater.

Boiler System - About back to top

This stainless steel heat exchanger is part of a boiler system in an industrial application. The energy source for the heat exchanger is a steam generator whose steam heats the interior of the stainless steel tubing of the heat exchanger to 338 Fahrenheit resulting in an exterior surface temperature of 266 degrees Fahrenheit. The source water has a temperature of 52 degrees Fahrenheit. It travels through the heat exchanger pipe and is heated to 185 degrees Fahrenheit in seconds. The heated water then is supplied to a 13,000 gallon hot water storage tank that in turn supplies all the hot water requirements for the entire factory.

Boiler System - The History back to top

The boiler system was newly installed in August of 2002 with raw water treatment consisting of traditional water softeners (Duplex Fleck 2900 24.X72.). The system was operated in this configuration for the first 18 months.

Numerous Softener failures / service problems combined with the substantial operating cost (salt usage approaching $45,000 worth per annum) and industrial discharge issues caused the owner to look for alternatives.

The first attempt was to try and get by without pre-treating the raw water at all; this proved to be disastrous. After only two and a half months the heat exchanger had scaled up to the point where the hot water supply to the plant had been reduced to a trickle. Pulling the heat exchanger for inspection and cleaning proved to be no easy task. The unit had scaled up so completely that it required the use of chains attached to hydraulic presses to force the coil out of its housing. The scale so completely surrounded the core that it visibly consisted of a big lump of limestone in the cylindrical shape of the heat exchanger housing rather than looking at the stainless steel core. It took two days of careful cleaning with phosphoric acid to restore the heat exchanger to a normal operating condition.

Finally in the spring of 2004, a system using the NaturSoft media was installed (Single tank, in/out in up flow operation. Ever since then, this boiler system has been in continuous service protected by no other water treatment but NaturSoft. Hot water usage in the plant averages 80,000 gallons per day, 6 days a week, and 50 weeks per year. The water treated has a calcium hardness of 446 ppm (26 grains per gallon) and small traces amounts of iron. For the entire service life to date, there have been no variations or drop in the performance / efficiency of the boiler system.

At the time of these photographs, the boiler had already heated in excess of 80 million gallons of water in its service life. More importantly, the photographs show the heat exchanger after one year of uninterrupted service having heated in excess of 24 million gallons of water since the last annual inspection! This spring (2007) the annual inspections of the boiler were suspended indefinitely. Since the previous two inspections had not yielded any need for cleaning and the system was operating within specifications the owner chose not to bother going forward.

No service problem or failure resulting in down time for the plant, no capacity constraints and zero operating costs.
